The Orland Square Cinemas were initially a four screen complex in one building near the current location of Toys-R-Us in the Orland Square Mall. It opened June 17, 1977. On December 16, 1983 four more screens were added near Wolf Camera.
The theater actually thrived until Marcus Cinemas' Orland Park Cinema was built around 1995. The original theater eventually closed down in the late-1990’s. The later addition was shuttered a short time thereafter and eventually demolished to make way for the Robert Morris College Tech Center.

Thanks for the ad Mike.
I remember seeing Star Wars there. It was close enough that I could ride a bike to the mall or Chicago Health Clubs and see a movie after. (131st and 84th)
Is the original theater still standing? I haven’t been that way in a while.
If it’s still there, perhaps someone (like me) could remodel it & turn it into an art-house or 2nd run cinema.
I was asst. manager @ 1-6 for a short time in the late 90’s. This place was a run into the ground. At that time it was that managers responsibility to not only manage the theater but also run the projectors as there were no more union projectionists. I have good memories of working for Cineplex Odeon in River Oaks, but taking the management position @ Orland Sq. was a big mistake. The job wasn’t fun anymore and I moved on.
This was one of at least four 1970s multi-screen theaters designed for Plitt Theatres by the Chicago architectural firm of Finck, Stowell & Frolichstein. The others were:
Cherryvale Mall Cinema, Rockford, Illinois.
Hawthorne Theatres, Vernon Hills, Illinois.
Fox Valley Theatres, Aurora, Illinois.
An article about the demolition (apparently of the original part of the theater): http://tinleypark.patch.com/articles/business-comings-goings-theater-demolition-begins-at-orland-square-mall
We rented the building from 2001-2002 for the eleventh hour haunted house but had to relocate in order for the building to be demolished…which never happened that decade. www.eleventhhour.info We now run the event in Elk Grove.
I uploaded the grand opening ad from June 17th, 1977 (along with the Bolingbrook theatres) in the photo section for this cinema.
I was a manager at both theatres Orland 1-4 and then I opened 5-8. seating was 250,250,400,400. The first big movie we played was Ghostbusters.
December 16th, 1983 grand opening ad as a 8-plex in the photo section.
