The Open Air Picture Gardens opened before(1908?). Name changed to Palace Gardens in(June 1908?). At first the Gardens and Theatre showed live entertainment, and from 1910 skating(roller?). The first movies were screened in 1911 sharing the place with the skaters(not at the same time?). The Palace Gardens were roofed over in 1911 or 1912 and renamed Palace Theatre. The Palace Theatre was renamed Capitol Theatre on 11th March 1931 and had 849 seats. The Capitol Theatre was closed in 1969 screening Fred Astaire in “Finian’s Rainbow” & The Beatles “Yello Submarine”. The 700-seat Gardens closed in 1971.
