Avonway Drive-In

Located on the west side of Mitchell Avenue behind the municipal swimming pool. The Avonway Drive-In opened on 31st December 1959. The drive-in closed in(about 1983?). The site has been demolished apart from the concession building which is now used as housing.

Address is 185 Mitchell Avenue, Northam. The entrance road and ticket booth base is still there. The house on the site might be the original snack bar(and bio box?) building?

I think it has the Avon River running behind the site?

A Google street view from 2018 shows no indication of a screen remaining.

There is now a second building where the screen used to be.

I don’t see any building but I do see the cement foundations of the leg supports for the screen in the corner.

Operated by Ace Theatres. The architect was W & G Leighton. The Avonway Drive-in was built on shire land(Shire of Northam). Closed in 1983.

The house is definitely the original concession building with extensions added.
