Cineplex Odeon Fairview Mall Cinemas

Opened in 1994 by Cineplex Odeon with five screens, this complex was located within Fairview Mall, located in the northern end of the city. In 1997, four more screens were added, bringing the total to nine, with seating capacities of 391, 297, 209, 219, 254, 229, 161, 161, and 160 seats each.

The theatre was by all accounts successful. Indeed, when Cineplex merged with Famous Players in 2005 and was forced to sell some of its theatres to satisfy federal competition guidelines, it kept this theatre, choosing to sell a newer, more modern SilverCity theatre complex in the Pen Centre shopping mall to Empire Theatres (since taken over by Landmark Cinemas.)

Despite this, in late-2006, the landlord of Fairview Mall decided to terminate the theatre’s lease in order to provide space for a new Winners discount store in the mall, despite the objections of Cineplex. The theatre played its last shows on January 25, 2007, and since then, St. Catharines has only had one movie theatre complex, at the Pen Centre.
