Owned by the city of Geneva, and situated to the south of the city centre, the Maison des arts du Grütli, opened in 1988, is housed in a former school, built in 1871-1873 to the plans of the architect George Matthey.
The centre contains two theatres (The Black Box, with 165 seats, and The White Box, with 50), a dance studio, music libraries and other meeting and function rooms - and two cinemas.
These have four main aims: To showcase films not usually distributed in Switzerland; to screen classic films (in collaboration with the Cinematheque Suisse); to promote film education, especially involving youngsters, and to support Geneva’s film festivals.
The two screens are at basement level. They are named after film personalities: Salle Michel Simon (named after the Geneva-born Swiss actor) has 200 seats, while Salle Henri Langlois (named after the film preservationist and co-founder and director of the Cinematheque Francois) has 70.
