Construction of the Roxy Theatre began in November 1935. The architect is not named, but it was constructed by the Whiting Brothers, and the interior decorations were by Nat Smythe of the Scenic Studios, Los Angeles. It was built to replace the nearby Liberty Theater which had been destroyed by fire in October 1935. The Roxy Theatre was opened by Harry L. Nace Theatres on May 1, 1936 with “Mr. Deeds Goes to Washington”.
It had closed by 1954 when the new (current) Roxy Theater opened on nearby W. Hopi Drive. The 1930’s Roxy Theatre now serves as a Southwest Accents gift store.

Boxoffice, Jan. 29, 1949: “M. C. Burles, district manager for Nace Theatres, made his first official swing through northern Arizona recently and spent part of two days discussing the theatre situation in Holbrook with William G. Trout, manager of the Roxy there. Upshot of the meeting was an announcement by Burles that a Nace theatre will be constructed in Holbrook some time in the spring. The site already has been selected. The house originally was scheduled to be built in 1948, but material shortages resulted in postponement of the project.”
