Construction began in 1941 to the plans of architect Luis Labat Calvo, but there were many delays. The Cine Universal was eventually completed and opened on 4th April 1953 with Clark Gable & Ava Gardner in “Estrella del Destino” (Lone Star). It functioned as a cinema until 1980 when was transformed into a concert hall attracting artistes such as Everything but the Girl, The Blow Monkeys, Dr. Feelgood and Curtis Mayfield.
In 2008 the interior was demolished, retaining just the outer walls and architect Carlos Riano transformed it into a gymnasium and spa.
