Ormonde Cinema

Located in Dungavan, County Waterford. The Ormonde Cinema was opened as a 960-seat single screen cinema in 1945. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. The façade had 3 windows which had stained glass depicting sun-rays. When seen in 1971 the cinema had closed. It re-opened later that year as the Panoramic Cinema and closed in 1984.

In late-1989 it re-opened as the twin screen Ormonde Cinema. It was closed in 2005. The front of the building was given ‘protected status’ and plans were proposed to demolished the auditorium. Sadly, during demolition on 29th March 2014, the Listed façade was also demolished.

The Ormonde was originally run by Dan Crotty, a replacement for his earlier cinema, but was last in the hands of the Spurling family who closed it in 2005 and opened the SGC. It was refurbished in 1989 when it reopened with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Licence to Kill. The site is understood to be now occupied by social housing. Name changed to Panoramic in 1971 following installation of a panoramic screen but closed 1984. Reopened as above with name changed back.
