Malco Theatre Circuit had all three theatres operating in Camden as the 1940’s were closing, but an independent opened the Camden Drive-In. Malco decided to compete launching the Mesa Drive-In on April 29, 1953. Mayor Walter Laney and Malco founders Richard and M.A. Lightman of Memphis made presentations. KAMD broadcast the event along with live music. The first film was Susan Hayward in “With a Song in My Heart”.
In 1955, Malco bought out the competing Camden Drive-In and both theatres ran the same films until season’s end. The Camden Drive-In was closed down. The Mesa Drive-In lasted until the end of the 1960 season and was closed and eventually demolished. Malco would open the Razorback Drive-In in 1969 returning an o-zoner in the area.
