La Scala Cinema

In the Newtown district of Dumbarton, East Dunbartonshire, the La Scala Cinema opened in November 1920 with “Wolves of the Night”. It had 900 seats. It was owned and operated by La Scala (Dunbarton) Ltd.

It was equipped with an Edibell sound system on 13th February 1930 when it screened its first ‘talkie’ “Hard to Get”. By 1931 the proscenium was listed as being 21ft wide.

By 1953 the seating capacity had been reduced to 791.

The cinema closed in 1961, having never been fitted with CinemaScope. It became a bingo club. In 1971 the building was converted into a disco named ‘Jaws’, but then destroyed by fire in the early-1980’s. It has been demolished, apart from the foyer entrance, which is occupied by William Hill bookmakers.
