In Porthcawl, on the south Wales coast, the Coliseum Cinema opened in 1912. There were local authority offices on the first floor, and the results of local elections used to be announced from the small balcony over the present shop door.
According to the 1931 Kinematograph Year Book, the owner by then was G. Beynon and Sons. Occasional variety shows were held, and a dance hall and a café were attached.
The 1940 edition listed a proscenium width of 30ft, and a seating capacity of 600. This had reduced to 450 by the 1953 edition.
Still open in 1954, the Coliseum Cinema had closed by 1963. By the time I visited, in June 2006, the building was home to a Spar convenience store and a post office.
