Cosy Cinema

In the 1920’s in the small village of Barlestone, to the west of Leicester, Thomas Chesterton, who had been operating a cinema in nearby Newbold Verdun, built the Cosy Cinema next to the cemetery, across the road from the Rectory. Films were shown on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Prices ranged from 5d for the wooden benches at the front, through 7d and 1s, to 1s 9d for the best seats. Bill Branson manned the pay box, while Bill Lovell checked the tickets and his wife Nell played the piano. (Bill Lovell was also Band Master for the Barlestone Silver Band.)

After the untimely death of Mr Chesterton, his son Maurice took over the business, then sold it to George Weston. By 1944 the Cosy Cinema had screenings on Thursdays and Saturdays only and this lasted until the late-1960’s when it closed.

The building continued as a village hall for many years. However, in October 2015 an application was submitted to demolish it and replace it with a semi-detached house. It had been demolished by July 2017.
