In Irvine, on the west coast of Scotland, the Magnum Film Centre opened, along with the rest of the Magnum Leisure Centre, in which it is housed, on 18th September 1976.
Originally it showed only art-house films, thanks to a tie-in with the Glasgow Film Theatre, but this was not a financial success. It moved over to more mainstream programming but still could not survive. The final film shown there was “The Hulk”, starring Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly on Sunday 17th August 2003.
On 1st April 2000 KA Leisure, a non-profit making organisation, had attained management control of North Ayrshire Council’s operational leisure facility and service portfolio, including the Magnum Centre.
The former cinema auditorium was used as a live theatre. Seating was for 323 on opening, but that was reduced to 311 to provide space for six wheelchair users. It was closed on 30th December 2016 and has been demolished.
