Vogue Cinema

In the Possil district in the north of Glasgow, the Mecca Picture House opened on 16th August 1933. It was owned by George Smith and James Welsh and was intended to serve the new Corporation housing estate.

It was sold to George Singleton Cinemas Ltd. on 7th January 1950 and renamed Vogue Cinema.

The Vogue Cinema closed in April 1968. The building became a bingo and social club. It later went into retail use and became home to A1 Kilt Hire. It was due to be demolished in January 2024, but was given a stay of execution for at least 6 months due to a preservation order. Unfortunately, it was discovered that demolition had already begun with the removal of half of the roof of the auditorium.

Not just yet, it’s been paused for at least six months after a building preservation notice, so it still stands: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-68011946
