Coronet Theatre

Located in the Lakeside district of Denver. The Yates Theatre was listed as seating 500 in the Film Daily Yearbook of 1928.

In a Westword Magazine article from January 20, 2014 titled “Yates Theater Could Be Resurrected As A Music Venue” by Patricia Calhoun discusses how current building owners Debbie Lease and Eric Satie (who purchased it from a unnamed family that had owned the theatre building since the 1950’s) are looking to renovate the theatre into a musical venue to be named The Yates and how the Art-Deco style auditorium remains intact.

Another (very well done) article in the Westword from November 18, 2015 titles “Denver’s Lost Movie Theatres Take One Roll ‘Em” by Brad Weismann mentions the Yates Theatre as also being known as the Coronet Theatre and the Rex Theatre.

By 1931 it had been renamed Rex Theatre and was renamed Coronet Theatre on September 1, 1948. It was closed in 1955. With that said, the article mentioned (as with the Westword Magazine in general) was very well done and on-point/factual.

Nice write-up about this north Denver theater. I had been in it once in the 1990s when it was still a piano store. The floors had never been leveled, so all the keyboards slanted downhill!

The new owners are still trying to figure out what to do with the former Yates Theater: https://www.denverpost.com/2019/04/25/yates-theater-tavern-denver/

Need to update the status from Closed to Restoring. Work began in 2021 but has been delayed due to COVID and some resistance from the community regarding an application for a liquor and cabaret license. The theatre will be renamed “The Yates” and will serve as a music venue with some of the senior staff formally of the Bluebird Theatre managing the facility.
