Regal Cinema

In the town of North Walsham, in north Norfolk, the Regal Cinema opened on 7th September 1931 with “A Warm Corner” starring Leslie Henson. The opening ceremony was performed by Guy Fanshawe, East Norfolk’s prospective Conservative Party candidate.

The owner was Victor Harrison. The cinema was built by Thomas Gill and Sons and cost £3,000. Interior decorators Crotch & Son produced an Egyptian style with a ceiling in motifs of terracotta lotus flowers in orange, blue and green.

By 1953, according to the Kinematograph Year Book, the original seating capacity of 585 had been slightly increased, to 602. The owner was shown as V.E.H. Cinemas Ltd, presumably Victor Harrison’s company. The proscenium width was given as 30ft.

In its later years bingo was introduced, interspersed with the film shows. Films ceased completely in 1977. After standing vacant the building was taken over by a motor vehicle dealership. By the time of my visit, in September 2000, it was home to North Walsham Plant Hire, which continued in November 2015. The building was demolished around May-June 2018 and housing has been built on the site.

Sadly looking on google maps in 2021 it looks like it was demolished around 2018 as in 2019 on google maps they are bulding houses on the land :(
