Alhambra Picture Theatre

In the 1860’s John Wildman was responsible for the erecting of a corrugated iron building on St John Street to be used for self improvement and education. It acquired the nickname of the ‘Old Iron School’. Around 1890 it became a hall for the Temperance movement, popular at that time.

Sometime around 1913 use changed when the hall was renamed the Alhambra Picture Palace. In Kinematograph Year Book 1914 it is called the Alhambra Picture Theatre; owned by the Alhambra Picture Theatre Company; and seating 430.

According to ‘Chronicles of Pendle Picture Palaces’ by Peter Sagar for Mercia Cinema Society, the last programme advertisement in the local newspaper was 1st May 1916. 1914 is the only KYB listing.

The streetview is looking at the site of a ‘Hall’ marked on an 1890 street map of Colne. On that map there is an area of open land between the lower side of the hall and West Street further down. The terrace gable end is there on the 1890 map.
