Located in the west wing of the Northtowne Mall. Previously owned by the Regal chain. The Northtowne 9 was owned and operated by the Golden Star Theaters chain, which also owned cinemas in Pennsylvania and Maryland as well as Ohio.
Previously had 5 screens, but now has 9. Not sure of when the additional screens were added or when Regal owned the Northtowne 9; I believe this multiplex had still another owner before Regal.
Also unsure of when the Northtowne 9 originally opened, although I know it eventually succeeded in driving the old-time Valentine Theatre out of business in 1994. It was closed in June 2022. In September 2022 it was announced that Phoenix Theatres of Michigan had signed a lease to reopen and operate this theatre. It reopened on March 16, 2023 as the Northtowne Mall Theatre.

I believe DreamWorks Pictures had the world premiere showing of their film “The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio” in September 2005 at this theater. (Ironically, the film was shot in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and New York City, not Defiance, Ohio itself.)

Shame! I feel sorry for the people who have to travel to Bryan or Wauseon now to see a movie.
The two movies I remember seeing at Northtowne were the original “Batman” and “The Abyss,” both in 1989.
Prior to Regal Cinemas this was operated by National Theatre Corporation.

Defiance, OH: March 9th Opening Announced for Phoenix Theatres - Northtowne Mall [Feb 22, 2023]
We are proud to announce that the Michigan based Phoenix Theatres opened the new Northtowne Theatre on March 16, 2023 after a six month renovation project that included installing: all new heated reclining seats, digital projection, Dolby ATOMOS in two auditoriums and Dolby 7.1 in the other seven screens, and a new attached lobby with self-serve soda bars.
“I’m not sure if it’s the same Regal that currently owns the United Artists and Edwards theater chains” It is, actually.
Thanks for clearing that up, RyanToDaF2044.
No problem.
