Town Hotel and Cinema

The Town Cinema and Town House Hotel opened(hotel-November 1969)-(cinema- 12th December 1969 with Sidney Poitier in “For Love of Ivy”). The Town Cinema closed in 1992. The cinema became a restaurant & bar inside the hotel. The hotel is now called Holiday Inn.

After closure, the equipment was taken to the Piccadilly Theatre to be used for screen 2.

That part of the hotel is now a restaurant and a cocktail and tapas bar(Ivy and Jack).

The restaurant is named after Ivy and Jack the two main people in For Love of Ivy.

The Town was part of the Ace Theatres chain and had a seating capacity of 636 all on one level. Being on the ground floor, patrons walked straight into it from the foyer. No stairs. I saw a dozen or so movies there and really liked it.
