Today it is a dress shop. But it’s nice that the building still stands.

1917 photo & copy added credit the Frank S. Magallon Collection, via The Old Neighborhood Berwyn Cicero Chicago History Page. Avers Theater on the right.

A typical street scene in Chicago’s old Ceska Kalifornie neighborhood, now known as Little Village. Here, this circa 1917 image from my collection features J. Klepsa as he stands in front of his cigar shop located at 3823 W. 26th St. The cigar shop used to be a gathering place for men to converse, and share neighborhood happenings and gossip.

Sanborn Maps show 3825 as a motion picture theater while 3828 lies in the middle of Avers Street. Most likely the person who set the type for the newspaper mistook a 5 for an 8.

In a May 18, 1916 ad in the Chicago Daily Tribune, the AVERS Theatre address was listed as 3828 W. 26th Street.
