Star Cinema

Located on the coast of East Yorkshire, 14 miles north east of Hull, it was a conversion of the Assembly Rooms of 1869. It is claimed a silent film was shown there in 1900 but regular cinema commenced in the 1920’s. The 481-seats were on one floor, stadium style. The proscenium width was 28ft and the stage is given as 30ft deep with four dressing rooms. Around 1930 it was equipped with a British Acoustic(BA) sound system.

The Star Cinema was taken over by the Leeds based Star Cinemas chain in 1955 and was equipped with CinemaScope, which reduced its seating capacity to 351. Closed in the late-1960’s, it had a short period as a bingo club and was demolished in 1973 to make way for a new library. The street alongside is called “Cinema Street”.

Harry:

Thanks for posting this on Cinema Treasures! I worked at the Star Hornsea as a part-time projectionist in 1960-61 when I was a student at Bridlington Grammar School. I left when I moved from Hornsea with my parents in April 1961 to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The open window on the right side of the second floor over Cinema was outside the projection booth. We used to hang out the window and chat with people waiting in the line-up.

My Dad was Chief Projectionist at the Star for about a year or so at the end of WW2 in 1945 before transferring to the Grove cinema, Ilkley.

The Manager was a Mr Thacker who transferred from the Star to the Tudor cinema, Bourne.
