Located in Edwinstowe, northeast of Mansfield, at the junction of Mansfield Road and West Lane. The Major Cinema was named after the Major Oak which is located close by to Edwinstowe in Sherwood Forest, reputed to be the burial place of Robin Hood.
The Major Cinema was opened on 3rd August 1936. The exterior of the building was in a Tudor Revival style, while the auditorium was in an Art Deco style with concealed lighting in troughs across the ceiling. Seating was provided for 422 in the stalls and 180 in the circle. The proscenium was 24 feet wide and the stage 10 feet deep. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. The cinema also boasted a café.
The Major Cinema was closed on 28th June 1958 with Norman Wisdom in “Just My Luck”. The building was sold and became an antiques centre with the café still in use. It was demolished around 2002.
