Located in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. Built and opened in 1926 as the Miners Welfare Hall it was designed by architectural firm Richardson & Lloyd.. It was briefly re-named Pavilion Cinema in 1929 after an earlier Pavilion Cinema in the town had been destroyed by fire in 1929.
It was closed in 1930 to convert into a cinema, build a new stage fly tower and install a Western Electric(WE) sound system. These alterations were to the plans of architect Jason Allison. It was re-named Regal Cinema when it re-opened on 2nd September 1933 with Greta Garbo in “Desire Me” and Laurel & Hardy in “County Hospital”. The proscenium was 33 feet wide, the stage 17 feet deep and there were 5 dressing rooms. In January 1934 it was taken over by the Leeds based Star Cinemas chain. A cafĂ© was soon opened, and around 1939 a dance lounge supplements its amenities. Equipped with CinemaScope in July 1954, the first film to be shown in this process was “Mogambo” starring Ava Gardner.
In 1972 it was converted into a 3-screen cinema seating 105, 153 and 84, and was re-named Studios 1, 2 & 3. Taken over by an independent company in the early-1980’s it was closed in 1984. It was re-opened by another company in 1985.
In the 1990’s it was re-named Regal Centre and operated as a live theatre in the former stalls and a cinema in the former balcony. In 2012 it was re-named Soundwave Arts Centre, but it closed in 2013.
