An early mention of a movie theatre in Montpelier can be found in the April 28, 1911 edition of the News-Examiner: “A new radium screen curtain, recently purchased for the Montpelier Theatre, will be used for the first time tomorrow night. Go and see how much better the pictures show up on this new curtain".
The Grand Theatre was operating as early as 1915 and it appears on the Sanborn Insurance Maps of that year. According to the News-Examiner, the theatre was managed by Joe Bagley and Gus Spongberg. It was noted in the March 27, 1958, edition of the News-Examiner that the theatre took business away from the Rex Theatre forcing it to close. Just as the Grand Theatre took business away from the Rex Theatre, the Gem Theatre opened in 1927, taking business away from the Grand Theatre and leading to its end.
Before the Rex Theatre and Grand Theatre, according to the News-Examiner, the first silent film house was in business by 1901 at 815 Washington Street (later the Royal Bakery building).
Today, the site of the former Grand Theatre is occupied by Burgoyne Auto Body.
