According to a 1958 Montpelier New-Examiner history article, the Rex Theater was located in the west half of the Cruikshank Building. Fred Cruikshank and Charles O’Conner owned it jointly, with management under Sherwood Gee.

According to the Sanborn Insurance Maps, the Rex Theater was built between 1907 and 1915. It was gone by the time the Rich Theatre opened in 1923 and became the place to go. Another theater, the Gem Theater, was also in town around this time but was forced to close in 1935 when the roof caved in.
