Located in the Market Place of Appleby, Cumbria (formerly Westmorland). The Public Hall was mainly a cinema from the early-1930s, also having a stage, four dressing rooms and a shallow 40 seat balcony. The projection room was at ground floor level and slightly off centre. Robb Towers, who also ran the Prize Cinema in Gretna, called it the Cosy Cinema, but it was taken over in April 1951 by Hebron Morland.
When new regulations in 1960 required seats to be bolted to the floor, this prevented other use, so films were restricted to Monday, Friday and Saturdays with no more than 400 attending. This part 3 concession allowed alternative uses, such as wrestling which ran until 1974. TV is blamed for the demise of films on 29th July, 1961.
The hall is still in multiple use, and I found the projection port was visible in 2009. It can be found up a passage close to the Tourist Information office.
