Located in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. The 1,260-seat Playhouse Cinema opened in 1931 with Maureen O'Sullivan in “Just Imagine”, and was in the Caledonian Associated Cinemas Ltd. circuit. Its main feature was a illuminated domed ceiling. There was a cafĂ© included. The cinema passed to the J.B. Milne circuit in the late-1950’s, and c.1968 to Kingsway Entertainments.
The Playhouse was totally modernised in October 1972, with a reduced seating capacity of 730. Sunday opening was only allowed from 1978. Operated as a cinema by Gala Bingo who put the Playhouse on sale as a cinema. Operated lastly by the APM Leisure Group, the stalls area became an amusement arcade, leaving 330 seats in the balcony. Films lasted until August, 1999, then the Passion Nightclub took over.
