Grand Theatre

Originally built as a chapel in 1813. It was converted into the Grand Theatre in 1928. There was a stage and three dressing rooms. A Morrison sound system was installed in 1930, and the first ‘talkie’ shown on 14th May 1930 was “Plunder” starring Ralph Lynn and Tom Walls.

In the late-1950’s it was taken over by the Leeds based Star Cinemas chain, and the Grand Theatre was closed in February 1965. The building has been repurposed for office space and housing.

The Scunthorpe Telegraph shows a different building and states it was demolished sometime after 1976. I shall investigate further. More info at: http://www.scunthorpetelegraph.co.uk/remember-cinemas-scunthorpe/story-29375616-detail/story.html

Having looked at the matter further I must deduce that there was both a Grand Theatre and a Grand Cinema, the cinema being further up the road.
