Telios, I would love to get a picture of the Byrne Building (No s, I think. ) My grandmother lived there until her death in 1967, and I stayed there for months as a young child, playing in the back yard and summoning my grandpa from the tavern for supper. Is there a link to the picture?

I have a picture of the byrnes building on 55th. and Halsted. I also lived there in the 60’s I think about that building all the time and have lots of memories growing up there. The corner store that was located on the corner was called pappas homemade candy store. I went to Oliver wendall Holmes grade school that was located a couple of blocks west of the building. I also have fond memories of going swimming at Shermann Park. I miss that old building and all the people that there. Thanks Pat

Thanks for answering John. I still take a ride through the neighborhood every now and then, not much left. There is 1 house standing on my old block at 55th and Lowe. I’m also trying to find photos of the Burns or Byrnes building which was located at 5500 S. Halsted. I believe right on the same corner was a Callas restaurant. That apartment building was big, there has to be a photo of that building somewhere. I’ll just keep trying. Thanks Again!

Sorry, I know of no photos. I can still see the Halfield in my mind though. I grew up at 50th and Peoria. Our local “show” was the Radio at 50th Place and Halsted. Sometimes we would take the walk up to the Halfield. It was a much larger place.

Check out “Images of America-World War II Chicago” by Paul M. Green. On page 119, there is a nice shot of 55th-Halsted in the early 1950s. The Halfield theatre is there, showing “FRANCIS GOES TO WEST POINT” plus “SCARLET ANGEL”.

You are right. It was a McDonalds. Next door to the Halfield was a custom shoe store. They made shoes for deformed feet and had plaster casts of those feet in the window. The slogan of the store was “Does your feet hurt?” Why they never said do instead of does is still a mystery to me.

Before the white castle, a Mc Donalds sat on the site

I went by there last month. The site is now occupied by a White Castle restaurant.
