Opened as the Winona Theatre April 17, 1911. It received complaints from its neighbors, and was closed down. A new theatre was built on the site in 1915, to the plans of architect Frederick E. Beall, and it was to be for the use of ‘colored’ people only. It opened as the Star Theatre in March 1916. It presented movies and vaudeville to an African-American audience.
It was renamed Rio Theatre in 1939 and was closed in March 1950. The Motion Picture Yearbook lists seats at 400. The theatre has been demolished.
