Motion Picture Herald, Dec. 15, 1956: “Fred Hall has closed the Variety, Akron, Colo., leaving the town theatreless.”
But perhaps it recovered, based on this Feb. 29, 1960 note in Boxoffice: “James McMillion of the Variety Theatre, Akron, recently revealed that he was a bridegroom around the first of the year. The wedding was held in Akron.”
Aha, here’s what happened to it. Boxoffice, Feb. 9, 1957: “AKRON, COLO. – Fred Hall, a high school teacher here, and his wife have sold the Varsity Theatre to Jack and Jim McMillion.”
Boxoffice, May 22, 1967: “Jim and Jack McMillion have sold the Variety Theatre at Akron, Colo., to William Krause”
Address is 210 Main Ave. This theater appears on the 1937 Sanborn (but not 1913). It is a small and simple concrete or cinder block building. Still there, with a very drab white facade using a lot of sheet metal.
At least up to 1937 Main was Greely, and this was just north of the intersection with Franklin (now 2nd). Not sure when they changed all the street names to the dullest possible generic ones.
The Variety Theatre was mentioned in the December 25, 1925 issue of Exhibitors Herald. Grant L. Beach was the name of the manager at that time. Akron, Colorado was mentioned in the January 4, 1913 issue of Moving Picture World, but the name of the theater was not given.
That 1913 mention has to be the Akron.
