Toongabbie is a small suburb about 20 miles west of Sydney. The Rocket Theatre opened in 1956, replacing the Toongabbie Cinema (360 seats) on nearby Aurelia Street. Both were owned by M.R. and A.D. Pacey who closed the Cinema in 1953.
The Rocket Theatre had a good location right opposite the pedestrian ramp of the railway station. It was a solid looking brick building described by theatre historian Les Tod as “spartan, no decorations, narrow foyer, front and back stalls divided by a railing. No candy bar, either, you had to go out to a nearby milk bar”.
The Rocket Theatre went through several owners in its brief history. John Hartman and partner Merv Connell took it over in 1960 and from 1964 to 1966 John Hartman was sole owner/operator. H.G.Holland is listed as the final owner in 1971. No owners are listed for the years 1966 to 1968 but an I.A.Connell is listed for 1968 to 1970.
The Rocket Theatre was demolished in 1972 and a small shopping strip replaced it.
