Gaiety Cinema

Located in the Rowbarton district of Taunton, Somerset, next to Taunton Railway Station. The Gaiety Cinema was opened in 1920 by the Vickery brothers. In 1930 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. After the end of World War II it was taken over by the Chelton Cinemas circuit based in Cardiff. The cinema now boasted a café.

The Gaiety Cinema was closed in the early-1960’s and was converted into a bingo club. After a while it was converted into Kingston’s nightclub. In recent years it has operated as Riley’s Snooker Club, which was closed in November 2012. It was demolished in late-2014-early-2015 to build housing.

I used to work there when it was a bingo hall in the late 1960’s …. working 3 nights per week after my daytime job, in order to buy a camera. I was a ticket seller/cashier. The Manager was a cigar smoking Mr. Gwilliam, who I believe travelled up from Exeter each day. Saturday and Sundays saw a maximum crowd. I also used to go to the films there from the late 1940.s..
