Plaza Cinema

Located in the small town of Thrapston, Northamptonshire. The Plaza Cinema was built in 1934, sitting on a corner plot overlooking Cosy Nook, off Midland Road, the cinema seated 400, with 300 in the stalls and 100 in the small balcony.

The Plaza Cinema closed as a full time cinema in December 1965. It re-opened under new owners as a part time cinema/part time bingo operation, and soon the Plaza Cinema had changed its use to full time bingo. Bingo ceased in around 1971, and the building became a furniture store. Unfortunately the former cinema suffered a disastrous fire in 1985 and gutted the auditorium, no original features survive and the auditorium was since rebuilt.

2007 saw the Plaza Cinema building refurbished yet again and now operates as a community centre.

The entire village has been recreated by a Knitting group, including the Plaza as a functioning cinema. Perhaps the first time that has happened, but shows the Plaza is well remembered. Pictured in Daily Mail 19/6/2019
