The Legion Theatre opened its doors on November 21, 1931 with “Extravagance” along with a short comedy “Aunts In Pants” and an unnamed cartoon. It was first managed by Ned Greene.

The Legion closed as a movie house in December 1957 but retained as a special events theater until 1959, and the marquee was removed in November 1961.

Yep, it received damage from the record-breaking 227 mile continuous path tornado, which was actually part of a Tornado Emergency.

The Legion Theatre appears in some of the video footage showing damage caused by the tornado that struck Mayfield late Friday. The roof and top of the stage tower have been destroyed. The building can be briefly seen about 19 seconds in on this video, at the upper left.

The NRHP registration form for the Mayfield Downtown Commercial District says that the Legion Theatre was built in 1930. The lower level contained meeting rooms, the second level had a basketball court with audience gallery, and the theater, which had a balcony, was on the top level. The theater was converted into a bowling alley in the 1960s.

American Legion Post 26 has a Restoration Committee that has a web site. There is a photo gallery, but I couldn’t get it to work with any of my browsers.
