At the time of its opening,it was hailed as “Greenville’s Finest Christmas Present”, and the first quad screen cinema in Eastern North Carolina when it opened as the Plitt Theatres 1-2-3-4 on December 12, 1980, and was the first quad theatre to open East of Raleigh. Located in the Carolina East Convenience Center on Memorial Drive across from the Carolina East Mall. All four auditoriums were state of the art equipped with full stereophonic sound systems along with a spacious centered lobby, extended seating features that had a seating capacity of 996. The premiere attractions for the opening of the Plitt Theatres 1-2-3-4 had the biggest draw of crowds with Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall in “Popeye”. The other big premiere attractions for its grand opening were “Flash Gordon”, “Stir Crazy” and “Caddyshack”, along with the coming attractions of “Raging Bull” and “Ordinary People”.
First owned and operated under Plitt Southern Theatres until 1987, it was acquired by Cineplex Odeon and later by Carmike Cinemas in 1991 when it was renamed the Carolina East 4 which ran the operations of this theatre until its closing in 2001. It was demolished in October 2015.

This theater is NOT demolished; it is still standing and vacant as it has been since 2001. The marquee board has been removed but the “Carmike Cinemas” and “1-2-3-4” signs remain.
The former Carolina East 4 Cinema may not be around much longer. The owners of Carolina East Center have given notice of eviction to all remaining tenants of the center, as the entire property will be demolished. Presently only a tattoo parlor and a laundromat, the last remaining tenants in the Carolina East Center, have not found new locations; all other tenants have made arrangements to relocate. The Carolina East 4 Cinema has been vacant since 2001 and no attempt was ever made to fill it since closing. The site is reportedly being cleared for a Hobby Lobby store.
Demolition began today on the entire Carolina East Center, including the former Carolina East 4 Cinemas. A new shopping center will replace the entire complex; anchors are to be Hobby Lobby and an unnamed big-box retailer (most likely either a Publix or Harris Teeter grocery).
This theater is now demolished.
