The Bordeaux Cinemas opened on March 30, 1974 as the Bordeaux Movies 1 & 2 that became Fayetteville’s first-ever twin cinema and the first for Cumberland County and surrounding areas. Owned and operated by Cape Fear Theatres and later on by Consolidated Theatres and Carmike Cinemas. At the time of its opening in 1974, the Bordeaux’s seating capacity as a twin theatre was at 600 seats each in both auditoriums. It was the first twin theatre to feature a deluxe ultra-sound system with full stereophonic sound along with push back lounge chairs for easy relaxation and viewing. A large luxurious lobby to eliminate long lines along with a dual concession stand. The opening attractions for Bordeaux Movies 1 & 2 were on Screen 1 was “Superdad”, and on Screen 2 was “Cinderella Liberty”.

By August 29, 1975, a third screen was added in between the original two auditoriums, which added an additional 300 seats each in both auditoriums and it was renamed the Bordeaux Movies 1-2-3 under Consolidated Theatres. By September 11, 1979 the original auditorium added on a Dolby Stereo sound system for bigger presentations. On May 21, 1980, it’s showing of “The Empire Strikes Back” was one of five theatres in the state that played it for its exclusive 70mm-6 Track Dolby Stereo engagement. By 1986, the Bordeaux was acquired by Carmike Cinemas after its acquisition of Consolidated Theatres and it continued to be one of Fayetteville’s showplace for great entertainment until it’s closed on October 2, 1997. The theatre that replaced the Bordeaux Cinemas was the Carmike Wynnsong Cinema 7 that opened on October 3, 1997. The Bordeaux Cinemas was demolished two years later to make room for the expansion of the Bordeaux Shopping Center.

By the time this theatre became a three-screen cinema on August 29,1975…“JAWS” was still bringing in massive crowds going on 11-weeks and would continue its run until October 30,1975.

The Grand Opening attractions for the Bordeaux Cinemas 1-2-3 on August 29, 1975 were the Fayetteville premieres of……

“WALKING TALL: CHAPTER 2”

“JACQUELINE SUSANN’S ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH”

And going on 11-weeks is “JAWS” that broke boxoffice records..
