Postcard to the Lee Theater 1942

Opened as the Lee Theatre prior to 1927. By 1945 it was operated by Martin Theatres and renamed the Gem Theatre. This was a rather large theatre for the town of Eufaula but it also had a few other smaller theatres. The Gem Theatre was renamed Martin Theatre in late-1950 and closed in the late-1960’s. It is still standing today but vacant.

There is a Reproduco Organ ad from the mid-1920’s which mentions the Lee Theatre in Eufala as one of their satisfied customers. This may push back the opening of this theatre by 10 years or imply a previous theatre of the same name.

My Great-great uncle (brother of my Great-grandmother) owned this as the Lee Theater in the ‘40s. Moses Gaffney Lee. My grandfather worked there just before WWII. Lee also owned another theater in Cuthbert, GA (also to become a Martin/Gem theater) Here is a postcard from wartime that was sent to my grandfather at the theater: http://imgur.com/a/pxleI

This house must have become the Martin Theatre in late 1950 or early 1951, per this notice in the January 8 issue of Motion Picture Daily: “Martin Theatres of Columbus, Ga., has just opened their new 1,159-seat theatre in Eufaula, Ala.”
