Pavilion

Located in the seaside town of Ilfracombe, Devon. The Victoria Pavilion was built in 1888. It was a glass & cast iron conservatory structure, very similar the Palm House at Kew Gardens, in Kew near Richmond upon Thames. It had a small concert hall at the rear and it was in this room which was listed in the Kinematograph Yearbook’s screening films from 1914 to 1919.

The Pavilion was rebuilt in 1925 as a 750-seat concert hall, replacing the centre section of the building, but retaining the glass & cast iron original ‘wings’. It suffered damage in a gale on 25th January 1990 when the stage house was destroyed. A thrust stage was built in front of the safety curtain and with a reduced seating capacity of 500-seat concerts continued until 1997 when it was demolished. It was replaced by The Landmark Theatre which opened in May 1998 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures)
