Hoyts Goulburn

Goulburn is 120 miles southwest of Sydney in the southern tablelands. It was home to the beautiful old Atmospheric style picture palace the Empire Theatre and the Art Deco style Hoyts Ritz Theatre.

The architect for Hoyts Ritz Theatre was Aaron M. Bolot who had worked for architect Walter Burley Griffin and was influenced by him and Bruce Dellitt who designed the Liberty Theatre in Sydney. You can see the resemblance to the Liberty Theatre’s tall front in the Hoyts Ritz Theatre and Bolot’s other Ritz Theatre, in the Randwick suburb of Sydney.

The interior reflected Bolot’s use of art with murals painted on canvas for the curved stairs. Streamlining effects included textured plaster with decorative details for the walls and ceiling carried out by G.R. Lumb & Sons.

The Hoyts Ritz Theatre opened in September 1936 with Shirley Temple in “Poor Little Rich Girl” & John Boles in “A Message to Garcia”. It had a long run before closing in 1972.

It was demolished in the late-1970’s and a few nondescript small buildings occupy the site.

I used work near this location and a KFC now occupies the location. Back in the early eighties, a billboard for the Village Drive In was set out as you drove its lot. Last posters were CATHOLIC BOYS & RED SONIA (both were on video at the time and never got to play coz the drive In had closed down and those posters faded over a 3 year period…sad really

Revisiting the past out of curiosity. The lovely Hoyts Cinema Goulburn was once managed by my father David Burke in the 1960’s, my mother at one time made the heavy velvet red curtains for the screen on her Singer sewing machine at home. Many wonderful memories remain of countless sessions watching the same movies more than once, today I still remain an absolute ‘movie buff’! The Hoyts was a lovely theatre with a great atmosphere, and comfortable and attractive lounge upstairs. How sad to read these beautiful buildings have been demolished to house buildings which will never be remembered. Have enjoyed looking at the photos.
