Cedar Rapids Twin Drive-In

Not to be confused with the Cedar Rapids Drive-In which has its own page on Cinema Treasures. The Cedar Rapids Twin Drive-In was opened on June 11, 1969 with Richard Widmark in “Death of a Gunfighter” & Elvis Presley in “Speedway” playing on the West Screen. The East Screen was opened a week later. It was closed at the end of the 1987 season. Owned by Central States Theatres.

All that remains is the projection room and concession building which are in use as office space for the concrete supply company who occupy the remainder of the site.

It was actually named Cedar Rapids Twin Drive-In. The theater itself listed their screens as West and East. The West screen opened on June 11, 1969 with Richard Widmark in “Death Of A Gunfighter” and Elvis in “Speedway”, but however, its East screen was originally scheduled to open two days later on June 13, 1969 but delayed due to severe weather.

The East screen opened one week after its delaying announcement. A short time after the East screen opened, the theater witnessed its first vehicle accident.

The Cedar Rapids Twin Drive-In closed at the end of the 1987 season.

Now Metro ready mox concrete supply. All that is left is the concession stand projection booth building which is the office building for the supply store. The old drive in was closer to 64th than 63rd.
