The Marunouchi Piccadilly I & II opened its doors on October 6, 1984 with “Police Academy” only at Screen 2, while Screen 1 opened with a live performance of “Shanghai Bansking” which is very unique for a movie theater’s grand opening. Screen 1 would later screen movies a very short time later as normal.
The twin replaced two theaters that both closed on October 2, 1984, which were the first Marunouchi Piccadilly (opened in 1957) and the first Marunouchi Shochiku (opened in July 1924) because of a redevelopment.
On October 3, 1987, a new 540-seat single-screen Marunouchi Shochiku opened its doors with a matinee as an adjacent to the Marunouchi Piccadilly I & II.
On June 12, 1999, the Marunouchi Shochiku was renamed Marunouchi Plazel, and in December 2008, it was renamed “Marunouchi Piccadilly 3”. Ten years later, it was closed on December 2, 2018 due to a major upgrade which downsized the capacity there from 540 to 255, and reopened as a Dolby Cinema on October 4, 2019.

The Marunouchi Piccadilly is also once the flagship movie house for the Shochiku chain until the chain’s relocation to the Togeki Building in 1999. Both Screens 1 and 2 were located on the 9th floor of the Yurakucho Center Building, while Screen 3 was located on the fifth floor and featured Dolby sound.
