Please remove IMAX from summary. This AMC dosen’t have IMAX. It probadly not a profitable theatre to upgraid.
AMC has been shifting the branding around with there locations especially between classic and AMC
I think they may have just added new carpet. The entire development (not just AMC) was being renovated so perhaps AMC is hoping there’s some life left in this place.
When I checked earlier, I am guessing the theaters that were closed were probably undergoing renovations at that time.
I visited last month and can confirm all 24-screens are still open and operating. Some of them looked like they had brand new carpet, didn’t look like they were preparing to shut down any portion soon.
I’ve been to Phoenix but not to this theater altough I had been receiving e-mail from Grand Canyon University so chances are if i get accepted to that college I will propably catch a movie here and see if they still have 24 screens maybe AMC is doing this to add in extra space for other things.
This one isn’t your typical layout so it may not lend itself to the typical “shut down a hallway” so it’s hard to say. I’ll be in PHX next week, I’ll try and stop by and figure it out.
Hard to tell, but by the showtimes, it seems they are only 18 screens open now.

I think they should not close it because it would be a hige waste of screens
It sounds like AMC either needs to work to improve this theatres attendance or close it. Giving one of their larger theatres the brand name that’s mostly used on small and medium sized theatres is a way of saying this theatre is a failure, it the name is based on attendance.
If Harkins gets this theatre, I might be more disappointed. I like it as simply AMC. I wish the signage still looks like this (like it used to be) instead of “AMC CLASSIC” alongside a modernized Carmike logo:
amc 24
THEATRES
Also, this could stink in terms of attendance because of paid parking, the fact that the AMC Esplanade 14 Dine-In Theatres (also formerly regular AMC) – as well as some Harkins locations, is only minutes away, and the fact AMC did not remodel this theatre and get recliners in it. I like movie theatres with recliners, but to me, many AMCs that now have recliners seem to be blander than it used to be now that inside they have a common design. Cinemark is also remodeling their theatres in the same vein – even when they get recliners.
Also, in Arizona Carmike was unheard of, with only one theatre in the entire state during its existance. I wonder if that theatre gets that branding as well. I wish this would still be just AMC, like it used to be. Scott Neff can you post a list of the 24-30 screen AMC locations that are closed off? I’m pretty sure many AMC 30s have only 17 screens open, with 13 screens closing sometime after enough of those 30 screens receiving digital projection.
I used to go here when I was a little kid. It’s disappointing to see one of my favorite theatres get the AMC Classic branding. At least it hopefully retains its original look and feel, as I haven’t been there since 2008. If it continues to have low attendance, Harkins might be interested in acquiring this theatre.
Also — some of these AMC 24-30 screens aren’t fully open anymore, often 10 screens are closed down/cordoned off.
It’s determined by annual attendance I believe. And if I’m not mistaken, this theatre is a stinker as far as attendance goes.
I thought AMC would not use the Classic brand on anything with more than 12 screens. Guess I was wrong.
