The Viccar Theatre opened in the late-1940’s in downtown Williamston. It was across the street from the Watts Theatre (later the Cinema, finally the Galaxy Theater) and next door to Rose’s 5-10-25 Cent Store (which was built a few years after the Viccar Theatre). The Viccar Theatre still stands but has been converted to retail.

I thought this building looked like an old Cato’s. A similar façade was on the downtown Greenville Cato’s (a converted WT Grant dimestore – since demolished). If any of the old Viccar Theatre building remains, it would be the only theater building left in Martin County. Williamston never had a shopping-center cinema.

According to the NRHP District nomination form, the building was built in 1905 as the Farmers and Merchants Bank in 1905. Due to heavy alterations to the Neoclassical Style Building, it was deemed to be a non-contributing building to the district.
