Besides Multikino Galaxie (currently Cinema City Galaxie) and Multikino Ladvi (currently Kino Ladvi), Mini Multikino Modrany was the third attempt of a purely domestic multi-screen theater in the Czech Republic. Unlike the first two this project failed. A huge risk of the project from its beginning was the known plans of foreign investors to built two multiplexes in the nearby Chodov.
Mini Multikino Modrany was opened on 27th December 2001 without any major celebrations with the projection of the European film of the year 2001, “Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain”. On the first day visitors had free admission.
Originally the theater was planned to be opened in early September, but the operator had funding problems. These problems then also reflected in the cinema equipment. While in modern multiplexes in Prague the operators competed in modern sound systems, Mini Multikino Modrany was equipped only with one Dolby system - the relatively outdated Dolby Stereo A in the largest 63-seats hall. Other sound systems in the three 50-seats auditoriums were from domestic production (Tesla ACP-216). The auditoriums were called Blue, Green Red & Yellow.
The biggest problem of Mini Multikino Modrany, however, was the architecture of the building itself, in which the theater was located. The roof of the small building was bow-shaped and therefore the projectors had to have a sharp angle. This caused visual distortions on the screens. Besides that, the building was not suitable for the disabled.
The operator of the theater was the company Broadway Film, which briefly (in 1998) also operated Kino Ladvi. It became known primarily as operator of single-screen cinemas in Prague, which were specialized in arthouse films. Before the multi-screen cinema opened, the company ceased operation of the traditional cinema Modrany that has screened movies since 1919. This cinema (Modransky Biograf) was rescued by descendants of the original prewar owners and is now screening three performances a day at an average.
The four screen miniplex changed later its operator, when Broadway Film had high debt on the building owner and its lease was terminated (on 6th June 2002). Another Czech firm (Hollywood Classic Entertainment) took over. Also this operator was not able to save the courageous project and on 5th May 2004 Mini Multikino Modrany closed its doors for good. The abandoned space was converted into a gym and solarium. However, even this business not retained and now a pizzeria is located here.
In 2002 the theater was attended by 22,200 visitors, other economical details are unknown.
