I remember the Sheldon but question the closing date of 1950. My sister took me to the Shelton to see Peter Pan and, since the film was released in 1953 the dates don’t quite coincide. Funny thing – I remember that when it initially closed, they build a John’s Bargain Store.
According to Brian Merlis, et al, in “Brooklyn’s Gold Coast: the Sheepshead Bay Communities” the theater was known as the Shelton, was built in 1920, and possibly known at some period during the 20s as the Sommer.
The Sheldon was a poor cousin to the Sheepshead, but it boasted the cheapest seats around. 8 cents for a kid to enter. 10cent popcorn. Saturday Matinees with lots of cartoons, serials, western shorts and a couple of films. Kinda like close to 5 hours for the cheapest price in town in the early 50’s
A one-story modern group of three stores now occupies the site.
