Sooner Theatre, Norman, OK

Built in 1929, the Sooner Theatre was designed in Spanish Colonial/Mission style, and could seat around 650. It opened on February 10, 1929 with William Haines in “Alias Jimmy Valentine”

The most ornate of Norman’s movie houses, the Sooner Theatre was built specifically for movies, and sound ones at that.

In 1978, the theater was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, having been restored to it’s 1930’s appearance, the Sooner Theatre is host to a variety of performing arts, including live theater, concerts and dance.

The Sooner Theatre is one of the city’s most popular and well-known attractions, receiving more than 20,000 visitors each year.

Harold Gimeno designed the Sooner Theatre. Mr. Gimeno also owned this theatre building, and was a Professor of Architecture at Oklahoma University. South of the OU Student Union is an elaborate memorial fountain dedicated to Prof Gimeno.
Oklahoma Today Magazine (Vol 32, Number 4, Fall 1982-pp 18,19,20,21) published a complete history of this movie house.

The Sooner is reported to be haunted by the apparition of a White Veiled Lady. Others have said they heard the crys of a baby.
