Located in the outer southeast beach-side Sydney suburb of Coogee. Built in 1916 and known as Bary’s Boomerang Theatre, this was predominantly a vaudeville theatre when it first opened. It was taken over by Andy Kerr, a colourful Scots immigrant who was the city’s best known bookmaker. He was the manager, and partner Harry Clay booked the artists. The Boomerang Theatre offered a programme of films and stage shows with a resident orchestra.
It was rebuilt in 1928 with a Streamline Moderne style and the capacity dropped a little to 1,450, and it operated as a full time cinema. It was closed in October 1958. In December 1959, the local council approved plans for a motel to be built on the site and the Boomerang Theatre was demolished in the new year. Today an apartment block named Windsor Towers stands on the site.
One of the regular patrons at the Boomerang Theatre was twelve years old Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell who lived nearby. He later said this is where he got the urge to become an actor. Some state records list the theatre as the Boomerang/Star Theatre in later years.

I was born in Coogee in 1928 and have fond memories of the Boomerang theatre. I lived in Beach St around the corner from the theatre. I can remember attending the matinee session on Saturday. There was always two movies, an episode of a serial like “Tail Spin Tommy” and “Buck Rogers”. It was quite a treat for me. From memory, it used to cost about sixpence.
This cinema won’t be returning(like a boomerang i don’t think?
