Walnut Grove Drive-In

The Walnut Grove Drive-In was opened in mid-July 1970. It was closed in the 1980’s and demolished in the 1990’s. It was connected with a racing drag strip.

A lumber yard and trailer park are currently in the location.

Above address does not map properly. Use Winfield Rd & Waterside Cir. The drive-in was about 5 blocks SE of this intersection on the south side of the highway.

Same drive-in? Location and name match, but not the opening date nor capacity.

Boxoffice, Aug. 10, 1970: “The 720-car Owens Walnut Grove Drive-In, located off Route 35 about ten miles from St. Albans was scheduled to open in mid-July. Owner of the new airer is Mrs. Matalie Gunter and the manager is Jack Cadle … Future plans, according to Cadle, include the building of a picnic area and a playground for children.”

A closer address is 8147 Winfield Rd, Winfield, WV.

Google Maps has updated their addresses and this puts it right next to the property.

A 1984 aerial shows the screen up, but the projection booth/concession stand torn down.

Today, the property is owned by Twin River, a lumber company, but the entire area where the drive-in sat is undeveloped and overgrown. No trace of the drive-in remains.
