Located in the Dixie Village Shopping Center off Franklin Boulevard, the Village Theatre opened on October 27, 1966 as Gastonia’s first-ever suburban cinema that was an alternative to the downtown movie houses. It was also North Carolina’s most luxurious theatre with a seating capacity of 750 that was owned and operated under Schneider-Merl Theatres. The Village Theatre was equipped with rocking-lounger chair seating and had the ultimate widescreen projection that was capable of showing larger presentations.
The premiere attraction for the grand opening of the Village Theatre was the Warren Beatty thriller “Kaleidoscope”. By the mid-1970’s, the original auditorium was split down the middle created two shoe-box auditoriums with smaller screens and it was renamed the Village Twin Theatres under Atlanta based Martin Theatres. By the early-1980’s, Carmike Cinemas took over the operations of the Village Twin until it’s closing in the mid-1990’s.
